Travellers to Angola
You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required depending on your itinerary and where you are coming from.
Measles (MMR) vaccines
Infants (6–11 months): 1 dose of MMR before travel (this does not replace the routine childhood series). People 12 months+ without evidence of immunity: 2 doses, at least 28 days apart. If you have documentation of 1 dose only, get 1 additional dose at least 28 days after the previous dose.
Yellow fever requirement
Certificate requirement: Often required for travellers (commonly for age ≥ 9 months). Requirements can vary by origin and transit routing—verify before departure.
If you need a yellow fever vaccination appointment, plan ahead. Availability can be limited in some countries.
Routine vaccines
Make sure you are up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella, polio, and your yearly influenza shot.
Polio
If you were vaccinated as a child but never received an adult booster, discuss a booster with your clinician. If your vaccination status is incomplete or unknown, ask your doctor about catch-up vaccination.
Most travellers (common recommendations)
Consider travel vaccines and preventive medicines because there is a risk of certain diseases in Angola.
- Hepatitis A: Risk via contaminated food or water, regardless of where you eat or stay.
- Malaria: Preventive prescription medicine may be advised before, during, and after the trip. Prevention steps also include mosquito avoidance.
- Typhoid: Risk via contaminated food or water; often recommended for travellers visiting smaller cities/rural areas or eating adventurously.
Medical care & medicines
Medical facilities and emergency services are limited outside Luanda and may not match developed-country standards. Carry prescription medicines in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription and bring basic over-the-counter items. Confirm your medications are permitted for entry based on the rules applicable to your route and nationality.
