Begin with contemporary Cotonou
Use Cotonou for markets, galleries, food, the waterfront and an introduction to present-day Benin. Choose a guide for large markets and arrange transport around traffic rather than trying to fit the city between airport transfers.
Give Ouidah and Abomey enough time
Ouidah brings together the Route of Enslaved People, colonial history and living Vodun heritage. Abomey is central to understanding the Kingdom of Dahomey. Both require careful historical interpretation; neither should be reduced to a brief checklist or sensational description.
Visit Porto-Novo as a heritage city
Benin’s constitutional capital is reached by road from Cotonou. Museums, Afro-Brazilian architecture and local religious and cultural history reward a full day or overnight visit.
