Southern and coastal Benin
Cotonou, Ouidah, Porto-Novo and Grand-Popo are humid year-round. Southern Benin commonly experiences a longer rainy period around April to July and a shorter rainy period around September to October, although annual timing varies.
Northern Benin
The north has a longer single rainy season and a pronounced hot dry period. Dry-season roads may be easier, but heat intensifies before the rains. Park access and security must be checked independently of the weather.
Harmattan and dry-season travel
Dry, dusty Harmattan conditions can reduce visibility and irritate eyes or breathing. Carry water, sun protection and any medication recommended by a clinician. Mornings can feel cooler than expected, especially on long road journeys.
Festivals and January travel
January is associated with major Vodun celebrations, especially around Ouidah. Exact programs, venues and access arrangements change. Reserve accommodation early and approach ceremonies as living religious events, not staged attractions.
