Wildlife is the defining safety issue
Never approach animals on foot unless an authorized guide says it is safe. Keep food secured, use a light after dark in unfenced camps and follow instructions about elephants, hippos, predators and snakes.
Road and self-drive preparation
A paved highway and a reserve track require different skills. Remote routes need fuel margin, water, navigation, tire equipment and a recovery plan. Avoid unnecessary night driving because livestock and wildlife may be on the road.
Health and evacuation
Malaria risk varies by region and season; obtain current medical advice. Remote camps can be far from advanced care, so suitable insurance and evacuation coverage are important.
Border and regional awareness
Confirm operating hours, vehicle papers and neighboring-country requirements. Conditions at a border can change, and arriving near closing time creates avoidable risk.
