Access and care
Accessible Tourism in Africa: Inclusive Planning
Accessible tourism treats the whole journey as a connected chain. A step-free room is not enough when the airport transfer cannot take a wheelchair, the booking form is unusable, or the attraction has no reliable access information.
Access and care
Begin with the traveler, not a label
Access needs are individual and may involve mobility, vision, hearing, cognition, stamina, allergies or communication. Ask what works for the traveler and record agreed arrangements in writing.
Avoid assuming that two people with the same diagnosis need the same support. Companions and personal assistants may also require seating, documentation and accommodation planning.
Access and care
Audit the complete route
Check aircraft boarding, baggage handling for mobility equipment, transfer vehicles, room layout, bathroom dimensions, power supply, paths, toilets and emergency evacuation.
Measurements and photographs are more useful than the word accessible. Confirm who measured the feature and when.
Access and care
Information is part of access
Websites, menus, signs and interpretation should work with assistive technology and use plain language. Alternatives may include captions, audio description, tactile information and quiet visiting times.
Unexpected construction or equipment failure can remove access. Obtain a named contact and a backup plan.
Access and care
Build dignity into assistance
Support should preserve choice, privacy and independence. Staff should ask before touching a person or mobility aid, speak directly to the traveler and understand how to report a failure.
Pricing should disclose charges for accessible rooms, equipment or assistants; hidden access costs are a warning sign.
