Tourism numbers are often repeated without their definitions. Arrivals are not people, receipts are not profit, and regional growth is not evidence for every country. This guide keeps the reporting period attached to the claim and explains what the measure can—and cannot—show.

One traveler may generate multiple arrivals by visiting several countries or taking several trips. Accommodation nights reveal length of stay but can omit informal lodging and same-day visitors. Border and lodging systems also differ across states.
Ask what the unit counts, who is included, and whether the series is monthly, quarterly or annual. Methodological notes are part of the statistic.

International datasets are more comparable because border crossings create administrative records. Domestic tourism can be larger but harder to measure, relying on household, transport or accommodation surveys.
