Baggage Protection for Africa Travel

Baggage protection can help after insured loss, theft, damage or delay, but it rarely pays the full replacement value of every item. Sub-limits, depreciation, unattended-property rules and evidence requirements are central to baggage claims.

ImportantThis guide provides general travel-planning information, not personalized insurance, medical or legal advice. Policy wording and destination conditions control. Verify cover directly with a regulated insurer or broker before purchase.

Airline responsibility comes first

Report missing or damaged checked luggage before leaving the airport and obtain the carrier’s reference or property irregularity report. The airline may be responsible under its conditions or applicable conventions.

Per-item and valuables limits

Policies commonly limit payment for each item and for categories such as electronics, jewellery, cameras and sports equipment. Expensive items may need separate declaration or home-insurance protection.

Unattended property exclusions

Items left in an unlocked room, visible vehicle, public place or checked baggage can be excluded depending on the wording. Keep valuables with you when practical.

Delayed baggage essentials

Delayed-baggage cover may reimburse reasonable essential purchases after a waiting period. It is not a shopping allowance. Keep carrier confirmation and itemized receipts.

Proof of ownership

Receipts, photographs, serial numbers, bank statements and warranty records can help establish ownership and value. Depreciation or wear-and-tear deductions may apply.

Theft reporting

Report theft promptly to local police or the relevant authority and obtain written evidence. Also notify the accommodation, transport provider or tour operator where appropriate.

What if the airline finds my bag later?

Only eligible temporary expenses may remain claimable, subject to the policy.

Cash usually has a low limit or is excluded unless secured as required.

Can I claim without receipts?

Alternative evidence may be accepted, but the insurer can reduce or refuse unsupported amounts.
